An Artists review Essay -- essays research papers
Nusrat Ahmad: Pioneer of Pakistan à à à à à As I walked up to the future interior designer of the Ahmad family, I wondered the extent to which Nusrat Ahmad had taken her designing career. I saw Nusrat sitting on the lush green sofa in the corner of her family room, thinking that one day she would be strategically placing sofas in other peopleââ¬â¢s houses. Belonging to a Pakistani family, I wanted to question the extent of approval she received from her family and relatives and inquire about other South Asians artists in todayââ¬â¢s community. à à à à à Just like any other Pakistani family, Nusratââ¬â¢s parents always wanted their daughter to be a doctor. As she struggled through high school with her science classes in order to please her parents, she started drawing as a hobby. Sitting bored in her Biology class, she developed a habit of drawing pictures of different organs of the human body in her notebook. She had no interest in the field and she bluntly told me that ââ¬Å"I enjoyed drawing more than physics or biology.â⬠(Nusrat) Her parents were unaware of her art, which started to show up at her schoolââ¬â¢s art exhibitions. Even until the end of her high school career, she did not tell her parents that she was serious about her art and wanted to pursue it, and only when she started college did she tell them that she had an avid interest in that field. They disregarded the idea, thinking of it as a childish interest and still forced her into pursuing a medical career. After the end of her first year in college, she started taking an afternoon art class with a famous abstract artist in Pakistan, Mansoor Elahi, who was well known for his murals in The Parliament, the Presidentââ¬â¢s house. Even though her parents did not want her studying art, they allowed her to take that class due to her incessant nagging. Nusrat studied abstract art with him for about a year and a half, ââ¬Å"encouraged by Mr. Elahiâ⬠(Nusrat) and most of her paintings were a reflection of his ideas. These paintings were exhibited at local art exhibitions on and off. Eventually, he told her that her paintings could be sold for about three thousand dollars a piece.à à à à à At the end of her particular 2 year college career, her peers granted her the title of ââ¬Å"Nusrat daVinci,â⬠a tradition where the juniors award a title of how an individual has been throu... ...estion as to why there are not that many Asian Americans represented in American literature is one that Nusrat could ask the same of South Asians. à à à à à When I asked Nusrat about the reason behind the scarcity of Pakistanis enrolled in art school, she agreed with Amy Tanââ¬â¢s comment about being ââ¬Å"rebellious in nature and enjoy[ing] the challenge of disproving assumptionsâ⬠(Tan, 264) Being brought up in Pakistan has given Nusrat an insight as to why there are so many restrictions on Pakistani children in their pursuit of art. The fact that being rebellious in nature has led both these artists to rise up and do what they desired is very stereotypical of artists, yet it has proven to be beneficial for both Tan and Nusrat. à à à à à Nusratââ¬â¢s defiant nature has enabled her to explore horizons that are not normally delved into by Pakistani women. She is one of the first female artists from Pakistan who has dared to rise up and portray her artistic skills to the world. As I got up to leave the room where we sat for the interview, I could not help but wonder if this future interior designer and architect would be willing to design my future home.

Khaled Hosseinis The Kite Runner Essay -- Hosseini Kite Runner
Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner In the Kite Runner, the author explores the ties that bind sons to fathers and childhood friends to one another and of the forces that tear them apart. Throughout the novel, Khaled Hosseini uses many literary devices such as parallelisms, and characterization, and symbolism. The main message is ââ¬Å"there is a way to be good again.â⬠Amir is continuously changing throughout the story as he narrates it which is evident through the characterization the author displays. He is always selfish when with Hassan, treating him as a servant but expecting a best friend attitude in return. He then realizes his mistakes growing up in Afghanistan and America and changes his ways, trying to get redemption for himself, a key theme in the story. Amir always wants to get attention from his father in his childhood and feels that he is being neglected by his father because he writes stories whereas Hassan is an athletic person. Amir believes Hassan is the son that Baba never had when in reality he is his other son. Throughout the novel Amir holds guilt of betraying Hassan in that fateful alley and it changes him as a person. ââ¬Å"I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years.â⬠Amirââ¬â¢s goal in life after moving to America is to ââ¬Å"do good againâ⬠... ...ast as infants. This is important because in Hassanââ¬â¢s religion, if you fed from the same breast then you were brothers. This symbolizes the brotherly connection between Amir and Hassan from the beginning and the relationship between Amir and Sohrab. Another symbol in the novel is the blue kite, which is used both in the beginning and the end of the novel. The kite shows the bond between Hassan and Amir and how Hassan was willing to risk his life for their friendship and how much it meant to him. Also at the end Amir shows his loyalty towards Sohrab, as a way to forgive himself. In conclusion, The Kite Runner is a great book, and I can read it over and over again, continuing to learn to make your own path and forgive your past.

Rhetorical Devices Essay
The Importance of Rhetorical Devices We, as students from America, may not be familiar with religions other than our own and especially religions from other countries. There are many factors of religions and cultures we may not be used to; Catholics go to Church on Sundays and that is considered to be their ââ¬Å"day of rest.â⬠Some Mormons have to maintain a certain appearance and dress in an appropriate manner. In the Muslim religion itââ¬â¢s perfectly normal and expected to have an arranged marriage. In ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Considerâ⬠Sabaa Saleem gives us an insight regarding marriage in the Muslim religion by sharing her thoughts and why she decided to eventually have an arranged marriage. Saleem was born from two Pakistani parents and lived in a small town in the Mojave Desert (Saleem 323). Despite the fact sheââ¬â¢s lived in California throughout most of her life, her culture and religion remain with her and are prominent especially during the time she and her parents star ted to discuss her plans for marriage. By applying good techniques and specific rhetorical devices throughout her article, Saleem allows her audience of people who arenââ¬â¢t as informed about the Muslim religion to get a better idea of why Muslims would have an arranged marriage, as well as their views and ideas. She uses a variety of tools such as repetition, including personal history and appealing to pathos. However, the tools that made ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Considerâ⬠more effective and enjoyable was Saleemââ¬â¢s use of tone and employing comparing and contrasting lists throughout. ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Considerâ⬠is written with an informative tone. Itââ¬â¢s filled with information regarding why arranged marriages are favored in Islam, why itââ¬â¢s expected and the consequences of refusing to have an arranged marriage. Saleem does a good job employing this tool because all throughout her piece she explains to her audience more about the culture and religion. In Islam an arranged marriage is a tradition that promotes the masculinity of a man because women need to be handed over to a man for ââ¬Å"safekeepingâ⬠(Saleem 324). Saleem explains to her audience that Muslims are obligated to abstain from intimacy with the opposite sex; she says an arranged marriage would ââ¬Å"easily satisfy her religious obligationâ⬠(Saleem 325). Employing an informative tone for an article whose audience is to less educated individuals is beneficial because they gain better knowledge of the topic. If the reader remains unknowledgeable a bout the topic theyââ¬â¢re reading or why itââ¬â¢s essential, they become confused and lose interest. Saleemââ¬â¢s use of an informative tone allows the reader to better understand why she has conflictions of having an arranged marriage or not. Although ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Considerâ⬠conveys an informative tone, she presents the article with two contrasting tones such as serious and humorous. This helps the reader remain interested and keeps the paper light hearted. She is serious about the topic of an arranged marriage, yet remains light-hearted and appeals to pathos by using humor. She says ââ¬Å"I should make a decision after five or six meetingsâ⬠¦our engagement would likely last a year or twoâ⬠¦ (Saleem 325)â⬠When Saleem discusses the process of how arranged marriages work, it has a strict timeline and makes you sense a serious tone of the article. Adding a serious tone conveys to the reader that this really is a serious topic; arranged marriages are highly important and must be discussed and planned thoroughly. Saleem wouldnââ¬â¢t be sharing her thoughts and ideas with us if it wasnââ¬â¢t an important matter. Understanding that arranged marriages are a serious matter also ties in with having an informative tone because it helps us recognize that this is vital to their culture and religion; it teaches us more about it. Despite the fact that Saleem has a serious tone, she still makes her article enjoyable to the reader by adding humor. In the beginning she talks about certain qualifications a man must meet in order to be her husband. Her list of criteria is humorous, especially when she says her stringiest test is whether or not he owns and regularly listens to every Radiohead album (Saleem 324). Authors need hooks to gain the readerââ¬â¢s attention. The reader most likely has no idea who Sabaa Saleem is or what her writing style is. Starting off with a humorous introduction entices the reader at an early stage and makes them want to keep reading because theyââ¬â¢ll think sheââ¬â¢s funny and entertaining. By continuing to apply humorous statements throughout the rest of her piece, the reader stays engaged and has a more enjoyable time reading. Because Saleem is able to joke about arranged marriages, Saleemââ¬â¢s humor shows us that she is open to the idea of an arranged marriage. Her use of a variety of tones is an effective tool because no one would want to read an article where the author portrays no emotion. Having no emotion or set tones makes writing bland and less enjoyable. Saleem is continuous ly presenting one idea regarding arranged marriages and comparing and contrasting her feelings with her parentââ¬â¢s. First she mentions how her brother decided not to have an arranged marriage, how that affected her parents and how they eventually accepted it. She then discusses about how her friendships with men were generally frowned upon, but as she got to college they were more lenient than other Muslim parents by allowing her to attend college away from home and enjoy her youth. Because of their leniency, Saleem wanted to just make her parents happy. When her father had a stroke, Saleem felt that her father would be more at peace if she had an arranged marriage, to make it seem as if his responsibility of being a good Muslim parent was fulfilled (Saleem 326). This list of conflicts she presents builds up to the climax and keeps the reader constantly questioning whether or not she will decide to have an arranged marriage. It was a good idea for Saleem to wait until the ending of her article to present to the audience her final decision because that way theyââ¬â¢ll keep reading and learning about the Muslim religion in order to find out what Saleem will end up doing. Providing a climax makes an article more interesting and appealing. This is an effective tool because if there was no climax or build up to the story, there would be no point reading. The readers are reading Saleemââ¬â¢s story to find out how her culture affected her and what her final decision was. The climax is what gets the reader to ask ââ¬Å"why.â⬠Why does the reader share this story and how is it related to her decision? Climactic points keep the reader questioning her decisions. Not only did providing a list of conflicts help build to a climax, Saleemââ¬â ¢s problems were from her own personal stories. Adding personal stories and writing in a first person point of view allows the readers to feel more connected with Saleem and relate. Personal stories and climactic points are all effective ways of having the reader engaged and more connected. ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Considerâ⬠was well written. Saleem strategically employed various rhetorical devices to write an appealing article. Utilizing rhetorical devices are vital for writing an effective article because itââ¬â¢s what keeps the reader interested and allows them to see a topic from the authorââ¬â¢s perspective. After reading Saleemââ¬â¢s article the readers are left with a better understanding of why people agree to arranged marriages and the Muslim religion as well. By employing specific tools such as tone and a climax in her article, she was able to achieve her ultimate goal of informing her readers about the difficult choices concerning arrang ed marriages. Sabaa Saleem wrote ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Considerâ⬠that advantageously used rhetorical devices to write an informative and interesting article and I enjoyed reading it. Works Cited Saleem, Sabaa. ââ¬Å"A Proposal I Never Thought Iââ¬â¢d Consider.â⬠75 Arguments: An Anthology. Ed. Alan Ainsworth. New York: McGraw Hill, 2008. 323-328. Print. View as multi-pages

Symbolism in the Road
In McCarthyââ¬â¢s book, The Road, McCarthy is able to illustrate not only the setting of the book, but feelings, expressions, and actions, by various literary devices. Although he brought into play several devices such as: imagery, tone, metaphors, and a couple of similes, the most significant would have to be symbolism. Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. The author may constantly use the same object to express deeper meaning. Symbolism is also often used to support a literary theme in a subtle manner, which in this case is what McCarthy did. An example of symbolism, and the most noteworthy would have to be the road. Just like that, the plain road. McCarthy refers to the road on several instances, thus making it imperative to the novel. The road symbolizes hope, as well as courage. The road means that for them it is the only hope of surviving. Hope that when they get to the end of that road they will be safe in a safe place. It also represents courage because they have the bravery of going on without knowing anything about the road, courage of going into the unknown. Not knowing what awaits them. Another example of symbolism is when the man tells the boy that he they are the only ones carrying the fire. In this quote the man refers to fire as being a symbol of them being the only ones left who have feelings in the world, who have a conscience, who still hold true to things that make us human, like empathy, hope, love and the will to survive without sacrificing your beliefs, things other people in this new world have lost. Compared to the others, ââ¬Å"the bad guys,â⬠The man and his son donââ¬â¢t kill, they donââ¬â¢t steal from the living, they help where itââ¬â¢s possible to do so, and, most importantly in the novelââ¬â¢s symbolism, they donââ¬â¢t eat other people, which can differ you from ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠and ââ¬Å"bad. â⬠Another example of symbolism is the mirror. The man and the boy went into a house and as they turned around a corner there was a mirror, and as the man saw his reflection he instantly reached for his gun, thinking it was someone else. In this case the mirror symbolizes what the man has turned into. It represents and supports the theme of survival present trough out the novel, what they have to be in order to survive in this new world. In another scene the man and the boy come across a river, which symbolizes after death, or the gateway to the afterlife. This symbol goes in hand with the quote ââ¬Å"the grass is greener on the other side,â⬠it is like if they are on the wrong side of it, like if they go to the other side everything would be better, and prettier. Therefore, the sea stands for the other life, the one you get when youââ¬â¢re dead, which in the case of the man and the boy would be best for them since the life they are ââ¬Å"walking dead,â⬠they are living a pitiable life. The boy himself is also a form of symbolism. The boy exemplifies innocence; he demonstrates that there still is purity in the world. He is always looking for the goodness of people. Throughout the novel they run into different people, he always wanted them to come along with his dad and him, and he was always willing to help them no matter if they are ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠or ââ¬Å"bad. In a certain time the boy is willing to sacrifice himself to help the man they ran into. He was willing to give him his food and not eat himself so the man could eat. A further example that goes hand-in-hand with the boyââ¬â¢s innocence would be his kindness. In this case kindness stands for his vulnerability. Since in McCarthyââ¬â¢s post-apocalyptic world, the line between kindness and vulnerability is very fine. Thanks to his father though, the boy survives, and keeps focused. His father serves as a realistic intermediary between the boy and ideal goodness. The boyââ¬â¢s hair being described as a ââ¬Å"golden chalice,â⬠stands for the boy sometimes being like a divine child who can inspire the man to goodness. The ââ¬Å"golden chaliceâ⬠makes the boy seem angelical. The boy's gentle nature provides us, readers, with hope for the future. Though he has only known this wild, post-apocalyptic world, he's still full of kindness and innocence. Speaking of the boy another symbol about him is the ââ¬Å"yellow truckâ⬠. This ââ¬Å"yellow truckâ⬠represented the boyââ¬â¢s youth, and his childhood, despite the fact that they live in a world where he could not be a child. In this world he was not able to live his infancy like any other child, and when he played with this truck, it was like if one saw another side of him, like if we were able to see the child that lives within him. Cannibalism is another form of symbolism that represents what the world has come to, what mankind has turned into. It symbolizes the end of civilization, and that eventually there will be no human in this ââ¬Å"new worldâ⬠due to it. Cannibalism also forms a major part of the novel since it can differentiate the man, and the boy from the ââ¬Å"good,â⬠or ââ¬Å"badâ⬠guys. However, when you are living in a world like the one in the novel, if you are a cannibal is it being a ââ¬Å"bad guy,â⬠or is it youââ¬â¢re survival instincts coming into play? Does it make you a bad person to want to live? Due to symbolism along with the help of other literary elements McCarthy brings to life a world that no one else could have ever imagined possible. There are so many books and films that try to portray the end of the world, but no other has done so as Cormac McCarthy has.

Product Innovation - Essay Example Ideation capabilities relate to organizational and managerial processes for the implementation, selection, identification and stimulation of innovation ideas. According to the results of this study, organizations adapt to distinct approaches to ideation. On the other hand, Sylvie Laforet writes an article by name ââ¬Å"A framework of organizational innovation and outcomes in SMEsâ⬠to address innovation and its consequences in small and medium-sized enterprises (Stamm, 2005). Sylvie develops a detailed theoretical structure of the innovationââ¬â¢s end results, how it occurs, as well as, its effects on the financial performance of an industry. She focuses on three distinct innovations in addressing the topic of market product innovation. Sylvie states several drivers to innovation in small and middle businesses (Siddike, Amna & Kohda). For instance, quality, business, environment, a desire to succeed and improve working conditions in SMEs drive innovation. As Jennie et al des cribes the negative consequences of a resultant formalization, Sylvie focuses on the positive impacts of innovation. The positive consequences of innovation entail: improvement of SMEsââ¬â¢ image, reputation, cost benefits, increased financial performance, recruitment of additional labor and increase in outfitted efficiency among others. Consequently, just like Jennie et al, Sylvie states the negative outcomes of innovation. For instance, operational issues, management and financial risks: inclusive of industryââ¬â¢s reputation and image loss, customer and employees issues, safety, environmental and health impacts, uncontrollable industry growth and costs. Such negative outcomes of innovation are outrageous and require the large-scale, medium and small organizations to take action to manage them immediately. There are several approaches on how to overcome organizational barriers to creativity and innovation. According to Jennie et al, a firm with an explicit focus on developin g ideation practices realise that there are negative outcomes of the resultant formalization. Employees develop significant ideas for innovation and creativity. However, the extent to which an organization can involve employees in ideation is a challenging aspect, even though additional technologies make the practice realistic. Nevertheless, the management requires to identify all creative employees within the business to curb the barriers to innovation and ideation. Surprisingly, creativity within the organization might emerge from people or teams that the management least expects. It is essential for the organization to steer employees and inform them the expectations of the ideation process. When the organization identifies the creative employees and innovative ideas, the next step involves removing the confusion and create a business environment where people can utilize maximum creativity. For instance, the management can use scenarios and visualize ideas (Schottler, 2007). It i s essential to ensure that every employee and subordinate member in the business is comfortable. More so, the management should discuss the changes in the management while at the same time, work on all permissions. The SMEs or large organizations must avoid performing an act that might jeopardize the process of

The Limitations of the Behaviourist Approach to the Study of Learning, Essay
The Limitations of the Behaviourist Approach to the Study of Learning, with Reference to Chomsky's Critique of Skinner - Essay Example Chomskyââ¬â¢s works have been rated as the most influential pieces in the study of psychology particularly concerning behaviourism. In this case, a lot of transformations were witnessed amongst learners who studied the language. With his works labelled as classics, and having all the evidence in regard to the study of language, as opposed to behaviourism that is too general, this work shall aim to understand the limitations of the behaviourist approach, with the reference to Skinner. 2.0. Body In the views of Noam Chomsky, the aspect of behaviour cannot be understood in the study of B.F. Skinnerââ¬â¢s operant conditioning. According to the thoughts of Routledge & Chapman (2005) Chomsky indicates that Skinnerââ¬â¢s work is the worst ever written in the history of psychology. In this case, Chomsky indicates that his work comprises tangible evidence and conclusions as compared to the behaviourism standpoint. First, Chomsky argues against the viewpoint of Skinnerââ¬â¢s learni ng through operant conditioning by arguing that one cannot study the behaviour of an individual, but not the components under study. The psychologists in this case, must not rely on the existing evidence and the abilities portrayed by the individuals, but the psychologists must go a step ahead and analyze the contents of the brain of the persons under study. From the brain, the researchers are likely to understand how the behaviours portrayed by the individuals have come into practicality. The brain, according to Chomsky (2006), is the root of the behaviours portrayed by the individual. The behaviours are simply a replica of the processes that go on in the individualsââ¬â¢ brain and cannot be alienated from the end product that is the behaviours of the individuals (Chomsky, 2006). In relation to Chomsky, Skinner went for end product- the behaviours portrayed- without getting to the grounds in which the behaviour has its roots. According to Altmann & Gaskell (2007), Chomsky emphas ises that study of the brain gives evidence of the behaviours portrayed by the individuals. In his work, Chomsky compares the study of behaviour to referring to Physics as readings in Science without considering the fact that the readings are mere data collected after an occurrence of a certain experiment by the learners or scientists in the laboratory (Randall, 2007). The study, analysis, testing and comparisons of data in the study of any field are compulsory. The end product cannot be alienated from its components; thus, the study of behaviour by Chomsky holds much evidence as compared to Skinnerââ¬â¢s study on operant conditioning and learning. On another view point, Chomsky indicates that yet another limitation of Skinnerââ¬â¢s behaviourist approach is that he relied so much on speculations as compared to critical study of the conditional behaviour. Scheer (2010) indicates that Skinner applied experimental investigations that had unfounded experimental techniques that wou ld have led to his study to having valid evidence on human behaviour. The limited significance of the techniques led to the coming up with the premise that behaviour cannot rely on inferences, but critical analysis of facts. According to Shackelford & Vonk (2012), Chomsky holds the view that language can only be understood in relation to Information
